Your first acupuncture appointment begins with your health story. I ask about your symptoms, sleep, digestion, stress and wider health before selecting treatment. Fine, sterile needles are placed while you rest comfortably. We work at your pace and discuss how acupuncture fits into your overall care.
If you are new to acupuncture, you may wonder how it feels or why I ask questions beyond the symptom you want treated.
Those details help me understand your pattern of health. A headache, for example, may occur alongside poor sleep, jaw tension or a changing menstrual cycle. The assessment helps make treatment individual.
Before your appointment
Eat a light meal beforehand and wear loose clothing that allows access to your lower arms and legs.
Bring your medicine and supplement list. Let me know about pregnancy, blood thinners, a bleeding disorder, a pacemaker or other implanted device, and any concerns about needles.
The clinic is at 4 Albyn Place, Edinburgh. Leave enough time to arrive without rushing.
What happens during the first session?
1. We talk
We discuss your main concern, medical history and the factors that may influence it. I may also assess your pulse and tongue as part of traditional acupuncture, and examine the area relevant to your symptoms where appropriate.
My functional medicine background informs the broader questions about nourishment, digestion, sleep and recovery. We discuss whether any additional assessment would be useful.
2. Needles are placed
You rest on the treatment couch while I place fine, sterile, single-use needles. Points may be near the area of discomfort or elsewhere, depending on the treatment plan.
I explain what I am doing and adjust treatment to your comfort.
3. You rest
Needles may remain in place for around 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the treatment. Many people feel relaxed or sleepy. You can tell me at any time if you need an adjustment.
4. We plan next steps
We discuss your response and what to monitor between visits. The next steps depend on your symptoms, how long they have been present and what treatment is intended to achieve.
Does acupuncture hurt?
You may feel a brief prick, tingling, warmth or a dull ache. Treatment should remain tolerable. Tell me about sharp or uncomfortable sensations so I can adjust or remove a needle.
How long does the first session take?
The first visit needs time for assessment as well as treatment. The clinic will confirm the appointment length when you book, particularly if acupuncture forms part of a wider functional medicine consultation.
How might you feel afterwards?
Some people feel relaxed, lighter or more comfortable. Others feel tired or have a small bruise at a needle site. A temporary increase in discomfort can occur and does not automatically mean treatment is working.
Take time to sit up and stand, especially if you feel light-headed. Avoid driving until you feel fully alert, and contact the clinic if symptoms are concerning or persist.
Is acupuncture safe?
I am a member of the British Acupuncture Council and follow its safe practice requirements. Sterile needles and careful assessment reduce risks. Serious complications are rare, but treatment still needs to be matched to your medical history.
Common questions
How many acupuncture sessions will I need?
We agree an initial trial and review progress. Some conditions respond sooner than others; ongoing treatment should reflect benefit.
Can I have acupuncture if I’m scared of needles?
Often, yes. Tell me beforehand. We can begin gently and you remain in control throughout.
Should I eat before acupuncture?
Yes, a light meal is sensible. Arriving very hungry can increase the chance of feeling faint.
Is acupuncture covered by health insurance?
Some policies cover treatment with British Acupuncture Council members. Check directly with your insurer before booking.
